PRO-COMM was born out of need. “Our trainees have 7 screens and often can’t get radio-ear!” So we added a screen and actual agency radio traffic to play continually in the background, along with this ‘active shooter’. Now trainees or students can be exposed to radio traffic and the special language of public safety radio.

When a trainer works with a trainee, indeed they do demonstrate those tools. The expertise, the way of handling a caller, the method of calming a person, the ability to compartmentalize information, prioritization, visualizing the scene— that all comes from within. No set of protocol flip cards can take the place of this level of mastery. And to think so would be like ask-ing a paramedic to pull out a set of flip cards when treating a patient who is lying on the street bleeding. No, these tools are accumulated through experience, expertise, intelligence — not by following a script. You must do the work to understand and learn the work.
